Okay, I’ve had some free time to ponder this thing, the Revolution controller, and I am now blown away. I wasn’t last night, I was a little bit this morning, but the promotional video has me hooked. You know, this one. Of course, it’s designed to hook me, but whatever. I am officially frothing.

Also, there’s an X and Y on the controller toward the end. WTXY!?

More after teh cut.

What worries me is that I don’t think developers are ready for this. I dunno. It could rock really hard, or it could be a remote with too few buttons. It definitely dosen’t fit in with the system-portable design paradigm where any game could be on any system with roughly the same controls. This could lead to both awesome Revo-only games, and also ports that suck on Revo. It fits with the idea that Nintendo is getting away from the direction the mainstream is taking. I’ll be ready to follow them too, I’m not satisfied with modern colsole gaming. It’s a higher-technology version of the PSP vs. DS issue. But in the end, the market has sustained both systems, one on pure innovation and nice games and the other on gadget potential and a small selection of games.

I wonder what they’re going to call it after they stop calling it the Revolution. Because they did stop calling it the Revolution last night. Somehow, no other name really fits it in my mind.

So, in the next gen, I’ll be picking the crackpot system over the massive-debt-incurring system and the disguised computer box. I’ll be following Nintendo as they lead me off the beaten path and into strange, potentially dangerous territory.

Yay!
